Romero Britto

1963

Biography

Romero Britto is a Brazilian artist whose cheerful, colorful paintings and sculptures have made him one of the most recognizable contemporary artists in the world. Born in 1963 in Recife, Brazil, he was one of nine children raised in modest circumstances. Even as a young boy, Britto showed artistic promise, drawing constantly despite limited resources. At just fourteen, he was selected for a group exhibition presented by the Organization of American States, and later earned a scholarship to college. A transformative trip to Paris introduced him to the work of Picasso and Matisse, and the revolutionary concepts of Cubism permanently influenced his artistic vision.
In 1988, Britto moved to Miami, where his career flourished. His first major American success came when he was chosen to design the 25th-anniversary campaign for Absolut vodka, joining a distinguished roster that included Andy Warhol and Keith Haring. Today, his work appears in public commissions worldwide, including the O2 Dome in Berlin, Hyde Park in London, and John F. Kennedy Airport in New York. His collectors include Michael Jordan, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and former President Barack Obama.
Britto’s distinctive style combines Pop art’s bold graphics and vibrant colors with Cubist-inspired angular forms. His subjects often feature kissing couples, hearts, and happy animals, conveying messages of love and optimism. Beyond his art, Britto has supported over 250 charitable causes through his foundation and personal contributions. He is represented by Park West Gallery, and his studio is located in Miami’s renowned Wynwood Arts district.
