Biography
Alexandre Renoir creates vivid, textured paintings that honor the Impressionist legacy of his great-grandfather, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, while forging his own distinctive path. Born on July 7, 1974, in Cagnes-sur-Mer, France—the same coastal town where Pierre-Auguste spent his final years—Alexandre moved to Western Canada at age four. Surrounded by art and his family’s rich history, he showed early creative promise and attended the Virginia Park School and the Victoria School of Performing and Visual Arts in Edmonton, Alberta. He explored goldsmithing, silversmithing, jewelry design, graphic design, photography, and theater arts before finding his true calling.
In 2004, a prestigious Beverly Hills publisher gave Alexandre the opportunity to paint full time, marking his breakthrough moment. Over the next twelve years, he traveled the world displaying his work in numerous galleries and exhibitions. Alexandre is represented by Park West Gallery and maintains a home and studio in Southern California with his wife Maria, son Felix, and step-daughter Julia.
While rooted in Impressionism, Alexandre’s technique differs dramatically from his great-grandfather’s. He paints exclusively with palette knives—even designing custom ones—and mixes paint directly on the canvas rather than on a palette. This approach produces vibrant colors and thick impasto textures that create remarkable dimension and depth. Like Pierre-Auguste, Alexandre embraces his ancestor’s philosophy of portraying life’s joyful, serene moments, creating bright works that celebrate beauty over darkness.
