Biography
Jeremy Barlow is a master of composition whose paintings transport viewers through the sunlit splendors of Venice and the charming outdoor cafes of regional France. With a strong architectural sensibility, he captures the dramatic interplay of light and shadow, creating landscapes that evoke emotions ranging from melancholy to joy, longing to contentment.
Born in 1945 in Kettering, Northamptonshire, Barlow dreamed of becoming a cartoonist as a child, doodling in pencil and experimenting with watercolors. His artistic journey truly began at the Northampton School of Art, where he studied illustration. He became a full-time artist in the 1970s, working in London and the Midlands before moving to Dusseldorf, Germany in the mid-1970s to paint European landscapes across Holland, Belgium, France, and Italy.
After returning to England in 1983, Barlow’s work has been exhibited at prestigious institutions including the Royal Academy, the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours, the Royal Society of Marine Artists, and the Royal Society of British Artists. He was elected an Associate Member of The Royal Institute of Oil Painters in 1990, becoming a full Member in 1994 and a council Member in 1995.
Today, Barlow continues traveling throughout Europe, painting historic towns from Paris to Venice while increasingly exploring smaller communities. His work appears in collections worldwide, including that of the Dutch Royal Family, and is represented by Park West Gallery.
