Biography

Rachael Robb was born in 1969 in Melbourne, Australia, where she studied Fine Art at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. After graduating in 1990, she traveled extensively throughout the world, living for several years in San Francisco and Prague before settling in London, where she now maintains her studio.
Robb’s paintings are distinguished by their dramatic use of light and shadow. Drawing inspiration from masters like Rembrandt and Caravaggio, she employs intense chiaroscuro techniques, setting her subjects against strikingly dark backgrounds. This theatrical approach creates mystery and depth in both her expressive portraits and still life compositions. She also uses digital photography to capture detailed, close-up perspectives of subjects like flowers, which serve as immediate reference for her work.
Inspired by her draftsman father since age seven, Robb never envisioned any career other than painting. She believes persistence is essential and that making mistakes is the only way to learn. Her work has been exhibited internationally in the USA, England, Czech Republic, Australia, Sweden, France, and Switzerland, including notable shows at London’s Barbican Center, Mall Galleries, and Royal College, as well as Art Expo New York. Robb is represented by Park West Gallery and continues refining her technique from her studio in northeast London, creating what she hopes are timeless works that collectors will treasure forever.
