Biography
Shlomo Alter was born in Romania in 1936 to a family of restaurateurs. From an early age, he displayed a natural gift for art and showed a remarkable ability to draw. In 1948, he came to Israel, where he began studying painting under the painter Aaron Avni during high school. Two of his soft pastel works were selected for UNICEF’s World Touring Exhibition of young painters, marking an early recognition of his talent.
During the 1960s, Alter received sporadic guidance from the world-renowned painter Marsel Yanko, who was also a family relative. In 1975, he made the pivotal decision to dedicate himself entirely to his artwork. Since then, he has held many one-person exhibitions and participated in numerous group exhibitions in galleries and museums throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, and Israel.
Alter’s work is characterized by a soft impressionist palette and a whimsical, naïve style. He often paints beyond the canvas onto the surface of the frame, creating a distinctive presentation. He also works in original serigraphy, a medium that allows him to capture the subtle color variations and delicate drawing characteristics found in his paintings. His artwork is represented by Park West Gallery.
